Q & A

Return to ->Ask the Doctor->Tests and Their Results

QUESTION: I was told by the GIG folks in Seattle that if neither the father or mother have celiac markers in their genes their children can not have the genes. Now I've read of a mom and dad that tested negative, but have a daughter diagnosed with celiac? How can that be?
DR. FASANO: The folks at GIG are right: if HLA DQ2/8 are not present in either mom and dad, the children will not inherit these genes and, therefore, cannot develop celiac disease.
