QUESTION: I need help. After two years of all three kids being totally gluten free, they are still sick. I mean in and out of the hospital. Uncontrolled Asthma leading to pneumonia and bronchitis and sinusitis. please help. My four year old is on gamma globuin infusions and also has been diagnosed with Common variable immunodefiency and now they think my other two kids have it. IS CD related to CMVID? School has started and it scares me to death because my kids can not stay well and yes the school works with me I know they are not getting gluten at all. The doctors here in Dallas are puzzled and keep telling me they will out grow this, BUT I see the older they get the sicker they are. What else can I do for my children?? Thanks for any help possible.
DR. FINE: I believe there is an epidemiologic association of celiac disease and CVID but gluten does not cause it per se, meaning a gluten free diet will not treat the antibody deficiency. But being gluten free if they are celiacs will certainly help their baseline health. This is a complicated syndrome if they truly have it. But bad celiac disease can mimic CVID because antibody deficiency can occur secondary to bad intestinal disease. The doctors should be sure no gluten is in their diet by assessing serum for antigliadin IgA. Prayers to you all.
