Q & A
Return to ->Ask the Doctor->Tests and Their Results | QUESTION: I am a biopsied diagnosed celiac. My grandson has just gotten results back from an IgG blood test. The result was a rating of 64. Now my daughter is uncertain whether she should put him through a biopsy. He's 6 and very small. Would you put him through the biopsy, or go with just the blood test? The doctor is pushing for the biopsy. In today's world, is the blood test enough? | | DR. RUDERT: At the present time small intestinal biopsy is still needed to diagnose Celiac Disease. With an elevated antigliaden IgG I would also recommend that he have a serum IgA level. Ten (10%) percent of Celiacs may be IgA deficient and this may attribute to falsely low IgA antibodies. Antigliaden IgA, EMA and TTG are all IgA antibodies. I had the pleasure of speaking to Chris Muldar, M.D., a Gastroenterologist in the Netherlands with expertise regarding Celiac Disease. He has told me in all children with short stature, prior to being referred to an Endocrinologist for further evaluation, small bowel biopsy is considered regardless of serology results. |
